Why Roof Pitch and Style Are Important

Style and pitch are aspects of your roof that every homeowner must know. In this post, Nuss Construction Company describes the various roof styles and pitches.

Gable

This type of roof consists of two flat surfaces that intersect at the ridge throughout its whole length. It is the most basic double-slope roof. The gable roof style is the most popular and is the easiest to build. It has common rafters of the same size for both sides of the roof.

Hip

Hip roofs are the second most common in the country. They are relatively harder to construct when compared to a gable roof. However, it should be noted that they are often the sturdier choice in high wind areas because they slope down on all four sides.

Gambrel

This roof has two sides, each of which has a shallower slope above a steeper one. It is also known as a “barn roof” style and is often used to allow for more storage area in the attic.

Shed

This roof has one flat roof surface sloping to one side of the structure. It is usual for a lower porch roof that ties into a wall or upper steeper roof. It is also used on smaller buildings, where one wall is taller than the opposite one to create the pitch.

Pitch

When investing in a new roof, make sure to thoroughly consider its pitch. The pitch is usually expressed as a fraction. For example, a pitch of 4/12 would mean a rise of 4 inches to every 12 inches of run. Consult your roofing contractors for the best style and pitch for your roof.
