A Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist

Fall is about to end. Have you finished your roof maintenance for the season yet? If you haven’t done so, your roof may be in for a tough time come winter. So, call up your roofing contractors, and ask them to take a look at the following areas of your roof before the first snowflake of winter falls.

Gutters

Start with your gutters. You may not think that you’ll need them as much during the winter, but you want to make sure that they are unobstructed to facilitate the drainage of snowmelt from your roof. Clean out the leaves from the gutters and downspouts, and then see if they are functioning properly.

Attic

Have your roofer check out your attic next. Apart from figuring out whether there are obvious leaks on the rooftop, also consider how well-insulated your attic is. The insulation that kept the sun’s heat away from your home during the hotter seasons will also be responsible for keeping the heat in during the colder season, so double-check the level of your home’s insulation.

Ventilation

Since you’re in the attic already, have your roofer check the ventilation system of your roof as well. Nuss Construction Company believes that a properly ventilated roof is a good roof, which means there is no imbalance in temperature across the roof surface. After all, improperly ventilated roofs melt any snow that has accumulated on the rooftop, which will then trickle down and refreeze when it gets to the gutters. This creates ice dams during winter.

Shingles

Finally, check the shingles. Your roofing needs to be in pretty good shape to protect you no matter the weather. Ask your roofer to check for any missing or broken shingles or other potential issues.
