The Do’s and Don’ts of Designing a Powder Room

Powder rooms, also called half-baths, consist only of a toilet and vanity. They also usually have excellent storage for hand towels, bathroom necessities and cleaning supplies. Often, powder rooms are meant to be used by guests, so they don’t require a large space. If you want to build a powder room in your home, you should keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind.

Do’s

You don’t need a large floor space for your powder room, but make sure it’s big enough to fit a vanity and toilet. It would also be nice if you have space for some cabinets, but you can also rely on hooks and wall shelves to store your necessities.

Good lighting is essential in the powder, especially if it doesn’t have a window. You can install sconces on the sides of your vanity mirror to properly illuminate your face. Make sure to carefully plan your lighting design as this could impact the look and feel of your powder room.

Don’ts

Over-decorating can make the space look cluttered. And since powder rooms are small, adding excessive items can make the room feel crowded. Moderation is key – don’t go overboard with decorations. Instead, you should invest in space-saving storage solutions, such as floating shelves.

Make room for a small linen closet where you can store your rolls of tissue paper. Stacking them on top of each other is not recommended as this could lead to clutter. Alternatively, use tissue boxes instead of rolls to give your powder room an elegant appeal while keeping it functional and convenient.
