As one of the top roofing contractors in our local area, we offer our customers a variety of roofing materials for their residential roofing projects. We can install asphalt shingle, cedar shingle and shake, slate roofing and metal roofing for our customers. Each material has its own distinct benefits.
Today, we’ll discuss the benefits of cedar shakes and shingles, and explain the differences between the two.
Appearance – Cedar shingles have a smooth and uniform look that spans the entire roof surface while cedar shakes have a more rugged appearance because each piece looks a little different than the rest. This visual difference comes from the distinct ways cedar shingles and cedar shakes are manufactured. Cedar shakes are split off while shingles are sawn smooth on both sides and cut tapered. Lastly, shakes are thicker than shingles.
Durability – Generally speaking, cedar shakes are more durable and last longer than shingles because they are thicker and made from premium grade wood. However, unlike shingles, they cannot lay completely flat on your roof. This is why an experienced roofer like us installs a layer of felt paper between courses of shakes. This protects the cedar shake roof from wind-blown precipitation.
Variations – Cedar shingles come in a number of different grades. Grade 3 is affordable, perfect for walls or sheds. Grade 2 is typically used as a starter course or for re-roofing while Grade 1 is premium quality. Cedar shakes are all made from high-quality wood and come in three kinds: tapersawn, medium-split and resawn, and heavy split and resawn shakes. Tapersawn shakes are sawn on both sides to mimic the smooth uniform look of shingles while medium split and resawn shakes have a textured look. Finally, heavy split and resawn shakes have a rugged appearance and are the thickest and heaviest option.
