Do’s and Don’ts of Designing a Nursery

A new addition to the family can be incredibly exciting and daunting at the same time. It will take months of careful planning and preparation – including the nursery. You’ll want to make their space to be pleasant, safe and comfortable as possible – and you can make this possible with the right design ideas.

  1. DO choose a particular theme or style. While you’re not limited to a single idea or concept, deciding on something specific allows you to narrow your focus and create a more consistent design. Is the baby going to be a girl? You should consider a fairy-tale forest theme. If you’re having a boy, how about a space astronaut design? And, if you’re keeping it traditional and making it a surprise, there are gender-neutral nurseries, such as colorful polka dots and zoo animal themes.
  2. DON’T forget about storage. Having a baby also means getting a ton of essential stuff, from clothes and blankets to toys and story books. Forget about that one large cabinet to store all the necessities – get creative with open shelving, smart drawers and baskets.
  3. DO designate a nursing and sanitation area. You can make nursing time more worry-free by having a zone designed specifically for this. Make sure the room has its own sanitation area, where you can set up antibacterial gels, paper towels and other essentials that keep the space germ-free.
  4. DON’T pick a dark color palette. If the nursery is a bit on the small side, you should choose lighter colors for the space to make it feel bigger and brighter. This shouldn’t be limited to the walls: make sure you paint the ceiling a lighter hue as well. In fact, making the ceiling the same color as the walls – or even one shade lighter – allows for a vaulted effect that provides the nursery a more spacious feel.
  5. DO let in natural light. You might want to install bigger windows to increase access to natural light. This not only brightens the space, but also allows fresh, healthy air to enter the room. At the same time, you should get sheer drapes or light-blocking blinds you can pull down when the sunlight gets too bright.
