Design Tips to Consider When Planning a Home Gym

Working out in the comfort and privacy of your home has its unique advantages. No longer will you be dealing with the everyday traffic just to get to the gym or wondering if the exercise equipment you are going to use has been disinfected recently. It also makes perfect sense considering the current situation.

To get you motivated during workouts, you must have a dedicated space that’s bright, lively and energizing. Here are some design tips.

Location

Any unused room in your home can be turned into your home gym as long as it has ample space and vertical clearance to fit all the equipment you’ll need for your exercise routines and for you to move freely. Ideally, a finished basement or spare bedroom will suffice.

However, make sure that the room you choose doesn’t feel too gloomy. A home gym that lacks natural lighting and outdoor views can feel like a prison or dungeon, and this can affect your motivation to get in shape. Invest in replacement windows with a wider glass area to frame the beautiful outdoor view and let sunlight in during your morning workouts. Artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation must also be considered to help you get going and complete your sets.

Workout Routine and Equipment

The size and layout of your home gym space are determined based on the type of exercise you are currently doing. You can easily accomplish this if you are doing yoga or calisthenics, but thorough planning may be required if your workouts involve the use of exercise machines, free weights and other aerobic equipment.

Some people can afford to replicate the complete gym setup, but others can’t. If you fall into the latter category, you can always start with the basic equipment. Apart from a small yet decent set of dumbbells, a jump rope and some balancing discs are enough to give you a better and quicker cardio workout than your regular treadmill or elliptical trainer.

Flooring

You’ll likely include a set of weights in your home gym so make sure the floor can bear the brunt of these heavy objects. It won’t be a problem if your basement gym’s floor is made of concrete; however, exercising on this hard surface will take a toll on your body. Dropping weights, whether accidentally or intentionally, can eventually wear down the concrete. Be sure you invest in rubber mats to protect your floor and your joints.
